Duyen Nguyen
Duyen Nguyen’s work brings together abstraction and representation in embroidered paintings and drawings. Symbols and text provide positive energy and humans, other animals and plants co-exist in spontaneous environments. She uses an expressive style and a variety of materials to develop mysterious places and otherworldly moods. Nguyen’s artwork reflects her interests in beauty, folklore, and Vietnamese culture.
She primarily works on fabric using embroidery techniques she has learned in Vietnam, but also includes beadwork, cut fabric, painting and drawing. The frames are made from natural wood or found molding and laser engraved to bring the whole piece together as an object.
Duyen Nguyen is an ambitious visionary artist raised on a small commune in Vung Tau Province, Vietnam. Duyen spent her childhood drawing and hand-sewing. Nguyen’s work is featured in several private collections throughout the United States. She has created over 1000 artworks, including clothing designs and collaborative paintings with her husband (as Nguyen Johnson Company) since she moved to the United States in 2016. Duyen has exhibited her work at the State Museum of Pennsylvania, The 6th Louisiana Biennial National Exhibition in Rustin Louisiana, Art Flow22 in Baton Rouge and the Louisiana Contemporary Exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans.
Jeremiah Johnson
Jeremiah Johnson employs a wide range of techniques and processes to develop his two and three dimensional work. His work easily blends traditional techniques with digital workflow and industrial materials. Throughout his work, his theme has remained consistent. The dislocation between dream and reality in America. The notion that this country offers both but gives you neither. He’s also influenced by regional folklore, his personal struggle with healthcare and the environment.
Jeremiah Johnson was raised on a fruit and flower farm in the mountains of central Pennsylvania. He received his BFA from Tyler School of Art of Temple University and MFA in print, paper and book arts from Syracuse University. Johnson’s work is in several public and private collections including The State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg PA, The Taubman Museum of Art, Roanoke VA, and the Servais Family Collection, Brussels Belgium.
Johnson makes art in the studio he shares with his wife, visual artist Duyen Nguyen in Thibodaux Louisiana. Johnson is also the Director of a makerspace at Nicholls State University.
